After Hours Escape

This homeowner wanted privacy and a lush landscape with varying textures and flowers on a year-round basis. We surrounded the property with mature 18-foot Robin Hollies and then created layering by adding clumps of Needle Palms and fall/winter blooming Camillas. Gardinas were added for fragrance and tree-form hollies were added as accent points.
Water and Forest Oasis

This homeowner created a backyard retreat around an existing pool embraced by a forest edge. Featuring lush landscaping using a combination of cold hardy palms as well as heat-tolerant northern evergreens, an outside sitting area was constructed with a custom designed and built pergola constructed to provide afternoon shade on a blue stone patio.
Backyard Tranquility
Triangle Area, North Carolina
This triangle area homeowner created a lush and private backyard retreat using salvaged garden art with the construction of a hardscape fire pit and patio next to a koi pond. A garden shed was constructed with a New Hampshire barn cupola salvaged and transported to North Carolina. The fire pit and sitting areas were heavily screened for privacy by the planting of mature hollies with layers of Camilla, spruce and perennials.

This homeowner wanted to create a meandering pathway through a wooded backyard. We used shade-tolerant plants including Aucuba, Rhododendron, PJM Azaleas, Plum Yew, Japanese Maples, Eastern Redbud and Dogwood which provide color contrast and texture as well as different blooming cycles.

We employed a variety of plants including Weeping Alaska Cedar, Southern Magnolias, Canada Hemlock, Burford Holly, Windmill Palm, Weeping Cedar of Lebanon, Weeping Redbud, Rhodendron and Trochodenron.
English Style Southern Garden
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
This Northern Virginia transplant to North Carolina wanted a eclectic mix of plantings in the style of an old English garden. Plants included Weeping White Pine, Kousa Dogwood, Rose of Sharon, Tree Hydrangia, Weeping Red Bud, Windmill Palm, Dwarf Sabal Palm, Yucca Rostrata and agaves. The landscape design accomplished the homeowner’s goal of having no lawn. This garden, once established, is quite heat tolerant and low maintenance. Photos here were taken on an mid-August day with the temperature at 104° … a perfect example of a soothing backyard oasis.
